PEER SUPPORT GUIDE
What Is Peer Support?
Peer support is human connection grounded in shared lived experience.
Understanding peer support
Peer support brings people together with others who have faced similar challenges. The purpose is not to diagnose, prescribe treatment or provide clinical care. It is to listen, relate, encourage and reduce the isolation that often accompanies difficult experiences.
How it differs from therapy
Therapists and healthcare professionals provide trained, regulated care. Peer support offers something different: mutual understanding from someone who has walked a similar path. These forms of support can complement each other.
What peer support can offer
- A sense of being understood
- Practical perspective from lived experience
- Encouragement and hope
- Reduced loneliness and isolation
- A community where asking for support feels normal
When professional help matters
Peer support is not appropriate for emergencies or as a substitute for professional treatment. Anyone in immediate danger should contact local emergency or crisis services.
